QUESTION: Now that it's fall we're back in the pool! The kids have swim lessons twice a week and I am going to swim fit class. What can we do to treat our hair after being in the pool so often?
ANSWER (by Catherine): If you spend a lot of time swimming in chemically treated water, your hair may begin to show the effects. Repeated exposure to chlorine and pool chemicals can strip moisture and natural oils from your hair, break down the natural proteins and can change the internal structure of your hair. Your hair may become brittle and dry, and if you have light-colored hair, you may end up with a green tinge. Pool-damaged hair can easily break and is prone to split ends. Give your hair a thorough soaking with tap water before you jump in the pool. Hair is porous and if it gets its fill from tap water, it’s much less likely to soak up pool water. When you shampoo your hair with regular shampoo directly out of the pool, you are adding detergent to detergent and the outer cuticle layer of the hair can weaken and break. In order to remove the chemical molecules from the hair, you need to use products specifically designed for this. Matrix has launched a new line of hair care products that include "Alternate Action" – a chelating shampoo that gently eliminates chemicals, chlorine, well water minerals and product build up. You hair is left purified and refreshed without that ‘chlorine smell’. Next, restore moisture that may have been stripped by using a ‘moisturizing’ conditioner. Come see me for more info!
